I used to think everything had to be perfect
Like almost any artist I’ve known, I had some paintings I felt weren’t great. I would put them in a drawer and tell myself Id come back. Or that I could do better. Yet that reflex was born and raised from years of comparison. Of others work and styles. Of my older photo realistic art in acrylics that was completely different. But somehow I felt had more merit because they were more ‘socially acceptable’. Something people would relate to and choose to display in their homes.
Amazing what your mindset can do.
But in looking back, all of them are great!
Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Turns out, I don’t particularly like a painting, it simply means I’m not in resonance with it.
Therein lies the key to picking art.
How to Pick the Perfect Piece of Art
So when you’re picking artwork (or indeed, anything) that you want to bring into your life, simply tune into yourself. Ask: does it feel right or can you pass it by?
It might be the colours. The design. The shimmer of the paint. It might bring back a good memory of something that feels completely unrelated.
You don’t have to know why. All you need to know is that it’s creating a feeling.
A sensation that causes a shift within. A change.
You might get a happy fuzzy feeling. Or it may be more like a sense that you wish to explore further. Follow your heart and let that be your guide.
And that my friend, is the key to using your intuition. Which ultimately is what choosing art is all about.
